Problem I: Multiplicity
Objectives:
Repetition is a key element of all art and design and is the focus of this assignment. It provides the backbone for music, language, and measurements of time and space. Visual repetition creates communities or collections of multiples. These collections carry information through the language of their form, physical properties, and identity. For this project, you will acquire multiples of a singular material and create a sculptural object that harnesses the language of your chosen multiple material.
Requirements:
Choose one of the following two approaches:
1. Using an appropriate adhesive, cover the surface of a found object with multiple units of your chosen singular material.
2. Create a form entirely of multiple units of your chosen singular material. Use adhesives or fasteners as necessary.
Think about the relationship between your objects overall form and your multiple material. This is the area where you have the most ability to play with the language of your materials. This is the area of the creative process that makes projects stand out. This is where ideas live.
Keep it simple! Select ONE materials that you can acquire in large numbers (in the hundreds). There are a great many things that you can get in large quantities for free or very little money, such as toothpicks, drinking straws, plastic containers, buttons, beads, rocks and stones, candy, paper, pencils, Q-tips, rubber bands, straight pins, etc. Go shopping at a few places that tend to carry cheaply priced things in bulk like restaurant supply stores, dollar stores, thrift stores, or super discount stores like Wal Mart. You may already have something in your home waiting to be discovered for this project. Think of everything you come into contact with as a potential material for use in this assignment.
REQUIRED MATERIALS LIST:
Your multiple material
Your found object (optional)
Hot glue gun and glue
Three ring binder
Plain and graph paper
3” heavy-duty putty knife/scraper
Exacto knife/box cutter w/ extra blades
Eye Protection
Proper attire
24” metal ruler
I recommend that you pick up several types of adhesive in addition to hot glue, such as tacky glue (craft store item), super glue gel, and maybe a quick set epoxy (hardware store item). Be prepared to run tests on a few different adhesives...
You will need additional materials and tools. Your project ideas will necessarily dictate this need. It is your responsibility to determine what you need for each class and to have them at the beginning of class. You may NOT use class time for trips to the hardware store, art supply store, or to otherwise acquire supplies. Failure to be prepared for class with your supplies will result in you being marked absent for the day.
